Your refrigerator not working??? Listed here are some basic troubleshooting hints.

Do you smell ammonia when you open any of the doors?

If you smell ammonia, the tubing inside the foam pack has rotted thru and the hydrogen - ammonia

mixture has escaped. The unit must be rebuilt.

Do you see yellow powder around your burner or boiler pack?

On most units, looking at the rear of the refrigerator, you will see a box or a circular sheet metal enclosure

which is the boiler pack. Sometimes the boiler ruptures and will leak. The yellow powder is sodium chromate

that is added to the mixture. Boiler repair - replacement is one of the easier repairs since it is external.

See photo below for a example of a boiler leak.

Unit cools on gas but not electric - Check to see if you have current to your electric element. If you have current, use a clamp on amp meter and check for amp draw. If their is no amp draw, the element is bad.

Unit cools on electric but not gas -  Verify if you have the gas on. If your unit has electronic ignition, have somebody turn the refrigerator on gas while you are outside at the refrigerator. Most units have a place where you can look into the burner area. You should see it spark and then light. If it lights then goes out the common problem is a bad thermocouple. This also applies to manual units where somebody has to hold a button in order to have a flame. If you let go of the button after holding it for a minute and the flame goes out, either the safety valve or thermocouple is bad.

No burner flame - your orfice may be clogged. Remove the line at the burner, and remove the burner assembly. The orfice is a small piece of brass with a hex head on it. Unscrew the orfice and hold up to a light source, you should be able to see light thru the orfice. If not, use compressed air and blow out orfice.

Unit not cooling on gas or electric - boiler and horizonal tank on rear of refrigerator is extremely hot

Your unit most likely is clogged - must be cut open, flushed and recharged.

Unit does not cool on gas or electric, and unit makes gurgling sound - unit has lost hydrogen gas and mixture is boiling. Most likely a very small leak and unit has to be pressure checked to find leak.
